Distributed Acoustic Sensing Auvergne Rhône Alpes

DASARA

Distributed Acoustic Sensing Auvergne Rhône Alpes(DASARA) project is an observational service from the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Lyon (OSUL) at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL). Our mission is to harness the power of optic fiber networks to gather and utilize vibration data for environmental seismology. Through the record of seismic ambient vibrations, we aim to extract invaluable insights that can be used to address a wide range of challenges, from seismic noise monitoring, the characterization of the subsurface, to Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). DASARA is all about utilizing Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology to its full potential. We have completed multiple phases of data acquisition with various partners from collectivities and the industry, laying the foundation for our operations, and we are excited to share our progress with you.

What is Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)?

DAS technology allows us to transform fiber optic cables into an extensive network of virtual seismometers. This groundbreaking approach applied to telecommunication networks provides us with a unique and highly sensitive tool to monitor and analyze vibrations and acoustic signals across various environments. It's akin to turning every inch of fiber optic cable into a sophisticated sensor capable of detecting even the faintest of vibrations. Our first product for structural health monitoring is crucial in assessing the condition of civil infrastructure, industrial facilities, and beyond.
